Canon, in their long-standing tradition of making good cameras has made another winner with the Canon A480.

The camera is pleasantly-shaped with round corners and comes in four choices of color: navy blue, deep red, black or silver (Go for black as it is always stylish!).

With that camera, you can get large pictures of up to 13 x 19 inches thanks to its 10 megapixel resolution. You can zoom in 3.3 times and has a 2.5 inch LCD screen on its back. Like most digital cameras, it works with 2 AA batteries (included) and of course, you get the best value with rechargeable ones.

It can correct red eyes so your pictures won't look like creepy bloody cat eyesand the camera can focus on your subject for a sharper, more detailed picture that lets your subject be the true center of attention.

You get a 128 MB SD memory card (upgrade if you can), a wrist strap so you won't lose it or fall off your pockets, a cd-rom and USB cable to process your masterpieces and an audio-video cable to let view your short movies.

Consumer Reports' opinion on the Canon A480

Consumer Reports has tested and rated this digital camera. Here is what they have to say about it.

Pros:

They liked its low price, the camera will make pictures of very good quality and they will be sharp too. The next shot delay is quite short too so you will be able to take more pictures fast, meaning once you press the button, the shot is taken and registered, not you press the button then there's a delay.

It has a large range of 15 modes, meaning that the Canon A480 will be able to photograph during low-light, fast-moving situations such as sports, indoors, shooting a short movie, etc.

As for reliability, the Canon brand is quite good as their digital camera line-up has a lemon rate of less than 4%.

Cons:

The delay may happen on the first shot. Hand shake happens often with a small digital camera and when it doesn't have an option called image stabilizer, this camera may take blurry pictures.

CR noted that the flash is located a bit close to where you hold the body, that means you could be blocking the flash. While we're talking about flash, this camera has its range reduced to to less than 10 feet (or three meters).

If you're changing the batteries, they might fall out as you change the memory card.

Other things that you should know about the A480

To save on battery juice, it will shut the LCD screen and it will even shut itself off automatically if not used for a long time, like a television. Some people might find that annoying.

If you are into macro photography, meaning taking extremely close-up images of subjects, this camera does this job quite well with the macro option.

When you buy this camera, you will be given a software to run on your computer and in it, comes something called Photostitch. This will help you create a large panoramic image from left to right, for example let's say you see a beautiful fresca and you want it in its entirety, you shoot section by section, and Photostitch will help you "assemble" it! Pretty nice, huh?

With fully charged batteries, it's not uncommon to take more than 200 pictures with the A480. Again, go for rechargeable ones.

What a few A480 owners say about their purchases

Mr. Scott D. Desalvo "Scott D." (Chicago, IL)

Very nice, inexpensive camera. Takes regular AA batteries, so it is easy to always be ready to take some pics. I paired it with a cheap, hi-capacity memory card, and I can take photos for days.

The included settings are very nice and this camera takes very good photos right out of the box, no monkeying around. If you are a camera novice like me, and do not want to spend $200 or more on a camera, this camera is going to do everything you need it to do.

I am not a pro, nor an amateur, nor even much of a hobbyist. I do not read the manual that comes with cameras. I needed a small, light, not too expensive camera to be able to take nice, high res photos with good, accurate color and detail and that is exactly what I got, at a price that is shockingly good.

This is a very light, small camera, but it is maybe an inch to an inch and a half thick, so this is not the camera you want if you are looking for a tiny subcompact camera that fits in a shirt or jeans pocket with no bulge. But, it is small, but takes great pics, and there are a bunch of built-in scene modes, like Portrait, or Landscape--stuff like that so you can set the camera for what you are doing and take a nice picture. It has a 3.3x zoom, which is handy. You aren't going to be able to see the lion's eyeball if you take the camera on safari, but it allows you to zoom in on your friend's face, or a houseplant, or your dog, whatever, without dancing back and forth, to and fro to get a good framed shot.

It is ready to take pictures in less than a second from the time you hit the power button, and it has surprisingly good battery life (I have a 5 MP Canon Powershot from 5 years ago higher up the line with doodads and features I only rarely used, but the battery life on that thing stinks). The battery life on this camera is pretty darned good.

Great starter camera for a kid or young adult, great camera for someone like me--who like to take some pics but will probably never worry about aperture or exposure or white level. All around, general purpose camera that rocks sums it up well.

Kathleen M. Oconnor (No. Billerica, MA United States)

Very pleased with the camera. There is just one thing that has a concern with me and that is that I have adjusted all the sounds that I can on the camera but I have never heard the 2 beeps when you push the shutter 1/2 way done to let you know that the picture is in focus.

Alain Truong "Amazon fan" (san francisco)

this is a solid quality budget camera. For under $100, you get a camera that takes high-resolution (10megapixels) photos. Response time is however slow as it takes many seconds to recharge the flash and be ready for the next shot. There is no view finder other than the LCD screen. However, back to my previous point, this is a basic low-budget camera so you would need to manage your expectations. You get great pictures, easy of use, and not a lot of bells and whistles.

J. Newbrand (DFW, Texas)

I bought this camera for my twelve year-old daughter. For the price, it has so many great features! She had no problems learning how to operate the camera. She is really enjoying it and loves the blue color. I noticed that the viewscreen on this camera is very clear and a nice size. I plan to purchase another for myself, as my current six year-old Canon digital camera is much bigger, heavier, lacking in features, and has a smaller viewscreen.

Where to buy the Canon A480?

The best place is none other than Amazon.com. You get many things from buying online there: free shipping as it does qualify for it, best low prices due to Amazon's purchasing power (and lower overhead), peace of mind that you know the biggest online store on the planet is not a shady fly-by-night that will take your credit charge and send you nothing in return, and you do get excellent customer service from them.
